The Plan
Like Adam and Eve, we've all made choices to live our way rather than God's way and it separated us from him.
The good news is God doesn't want us estranged from him.
He never did. So he did something about it.
Permanent forgiveness and re-connection is a gift he offers to every person on the planet. Humans can never make up for their sin induced separation from God by self-improvement or good works. We just don't have it in us.
But God does. He has a plan.
Jesus
Trusting in Jesus as God's complete offer of forgiveness saves us from this separated condition.
Rescue and re-connection occur the moment we believe what God did for us through his son Jesus. When we embrace God's "I'll fix it" plan by faith, our sin condition is taken away, and we enjoy a fully restored relationship with God - forever.

The work of God on the cross did not influence God to love us, did not increase that love by one degree, and did not open any fount of grace or mercy in His heart. He had loved us from eternity, and needed nothing to stimulate that love. The cross is not responsible for God's love, rather it was His love that conceived the cross as the one method by which we could be saved.
